house and home, children, unschooling, in my opinionJanuary 4, 2006 11:26 pm

Finished the floors, got to upstairs, did both bathrooms up there, and shelled out $74 to the children for sticks! How could I have known that they’d really get into gear for a nickle a stick? I figured, well, they’ll hang in there maybe, 45 minutes, maybe an hour, and more than 2 hours later, they were all involved, and demanding their pay! And suddenly they were making little noises about how, aawwww, I, the mom, don’t get paid for all my work, and ooowwww, isn’t that saaaad…yeah, dammit, it IS sad. I figured with Speedreader’s pay, he got a bit better than $15 an hour! He’ll be damned lucky to get that with a college education! He’ll be begging me to pick up sticks! I’ve never earned that much! Then, I got to teach the awesome lesson of telling him that the Chick-Fil-A meal we all got for lunch just ate one whole hour of his stick-picking-up-work. Wow. Was he ever astonished. A whole hour? Maybe he didn’t like to eat out all that much afterall…that Fly Pen he got for Christmas? Seven stick picking up hours. The Four Wheeler he thought we’d be stupid enough to look into? 21 stick picking up hours…This has proved to be an unschool lesson worth its weight in gold. He is FINALLY beginning to understand what we mean when we say we want to “stretch our dollar”, or we need to “be mindful and good stewards of what we spend”. Once he had to sweat for it *presto*! he’s suddenly a fiscal conservative.

I once read that the difference in a liberal (and I mean more fiscally here than anything else) and a conservative is that the liberal has nothing to lose, and the conservative has earned something he/she doesn’t want to give up without say in the giving. Makes some sense to me. All I know is that I got more conservative after I saw how much was taken out of the paycheck we’d spent many many life hours earning. Not so unlike Speedreader realizing how many sticks he’d have to pick up for a trip to Lego Land. And I didn’t even issue a 10-99. Happy Income Tax Day, which isn’t so far away.

Well, not uncle, but maybe just a little break at the ol’ laptop. I’m rewarding myself with a sitdown and list of what I’ve accomplished, not surfing and writing all morning.

In the last 3 hours:
1. Kitchen is clean
2. Downstairs bath
3. Down bath floor washed (how do kids pee behind the toilet?)
4. Downstairs dusted (mostly, at least what you can see easily)
5. TV OFF and dusted off (thank you Rae)
6. Desk dusted
7. Tree taken out to curb (so sad)
8. Toys picked up and at least moved to steps to go up
9. Dining room table cleared and scrubbed (damn playdoh)
10. And now, voila’, I can vacuum.

Also, I got the kids out from under foot with a seemingly brilliant scheme. Tell them that for every stick they pick up (we had a big storm recently) out of the yard, they get a nickle. Sorry, Mr. Tango, but we may go broke, or at least have to borrow from them for groceries. Speedreader became speed-picker-upper, and is up to about 476 sticks, Catgirl, not wanting to be undone, is gaining at 350 or so, and Blue Boy has a big ol’bucketful. At least they’re not bickering. In fact, the thought of money is making them downright jovial, cooperative and just peachy keen with eachother. Here, let me write down that new stick count for you…oh no, after you…do you need help with that wheelbarrow, sister dearest…why no, but thank you, you with that wagon?…mais non, but how about littlest brother, does he need us, pray chance? Water anyone? Moist towelette? Whassup with that? They can only join forces for the greater good of earning cash?!? Not for allowing one sane hour of peace in our home?!? Gack.

To spend the day catching up on all that must be done around here, and not running to my computer every time I hear that taunting little *bing* indicating that yes, I have new mail, so possibly some wonderful compliment on my brilliant and witty life observations. I can live without constant affirmation. I can, I can, I can. I hope.

What’s for Dinner Wednesday. Krisco at Crib Ceiling does this little thing, and it may actually get me out of my rut. Now if I can just get her to post recipes that will jive with Leanne’s pounds2go, my life may be perfectly in sync, all cacooned by blogland. If only someone had a foolproof way to get and stay organized. And teach my children. And oh, guarantee every day to be a good hair day.

Anyway, did an impromptu Shepherd’s Pie last night. For you veggies, I suppose you can sub with Boca or other meat-like products. I truly don’t know what to do with the vegan aspects…no practice there (if you do, R2K, post it and let those fellow vegans know!). Had browned ground beef, lean. About a pound. Added leftover saugage, browned, about 1/2 a pound. Corn, chopped carrots, onion and garlic to taste. About 2 cups of beef broth, and 3-4 T. of flour. Simmered 5-10 minutes, covered. Salt, pepper, celery salt, thyme, pinch of ground cloves to taste. Top with quick biscuit mix, mixed according to directions, and sprinkle with grated cheese. Bake 40 min. or so at 350. No hard rules, here. Hubby and I loved it. Kids turned up noses at stuff they couldn’t recognize, but that’s no real surprise. If it’s not chicken or mac, they are suspicious. I just let’em go hungry (no need to report me, I’ll take my case to the highest court in the land), and they eat a great breakfast the next morning. I’m done with many mini meals!
